A Step Back In Time to Where Golfing Tradition is Alive and Well, Western Gailes Golf Club

Western Gailes Golf Club, nestled on the stunning Ayrshire coastline in Scotland, offers a golfing experience that is as rich in history as it is in challenge. Established in 1897, this classic links course is renowned for its natural beauty, strategic layout, and reputation as one of the finest golfing destinations in the world. To play at Western Gailes is to immerse oneself in the traditions of the game, to feel the salty breeze of the Firth of Clyde, and to test one’s skills against a course that has challenged amateurs and professionals alike for well over a century.

A Rich History

The origins of Western Gailes can be traced back to a group of passionate golfers from Glasgow who sought to establish a true links course in Ayrshire. They found the perfect location between the railway line and the coastline, a narrow strip of land that would become one of Scotland’s most revered golf courses. From its early days, the course gained a reputation for its testing conditions, with wind and weather playing a significant role in every round.

Western Gailes has hosted numerous prestigious events over the years, including Final Qualifying for The Open Championship, the Scottish Amateur Championship, the Curtis Cup, and the European Tour’s Scottish Professional Championship. Some of the greatest players in golf history have walked its fairways, from Open Champions like Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen to modern stars honing their links skills before taking on the world’s biggest tournaments.

Arrival and First Impressions

Western Gailes sits squarely in the middle of golfing heaven in central Ayrshire. Glasgow Gailes is just across the road. Dundonald Links and Kilmarnock Barassie are on the other side of the main Glasgow to Ayr railway line. As you drive over the controlled railway crossing you can see immediately the narrow strip of land the course sits on. Railway line on one side, the River Clyde leading to the North Sea on the other. The course at its widest point is less than 300 yards between the boundaries. It’s a tight fit and it’s not a surprise that all the holes play up or down the coast. There’s not one hole that plays toward the sea or towards the railway.

Upon arriving at the club, one is immediately struck by the understated charm of the clubhouse and the narrowness of the car park. Land is at a premium here and every space is utilised to its maximum. The clubhouse at Western Gailes exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, reminiscent of bygone days. It feels like a sanctuary for golfers, a place where tradition and camaraderie come first.

The Course Layout: A True Links Test

Western Gailes is a par-71 course that stretches to just over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, though it offers a range of tees to suit golfers of all abilities. The course layout places a premium on strategy, precision, and adaptability. Designed to work in harmony with the natural contours of the land, it feels as if the course has always been there, shaped by the wind, sea, and sand.

We chose to play from the white tees at just over 6600 yards. As always, choose the tees to suit your game, If you know how far you average off the tee, check you can reach to majority of the par 4’s in two and play from the set of tees that gives you the best chance to reach those greens.

The Front Nine

Selecting just three holes as our favourite wasn’t easy as you could pick any of the front nine. We eventually settled on the first, the 6th and the 7th holes as we think these holes sum up the challenges of this traditional links layout.

The “fairway” on the first

The opening hole is a short par 4 of “only” 309 yards. However, there are no flat lies on this narrow fairway. This hole is the perfect example of creating a hole from the land in front of you. If you hit the fairway then it’s potluck on whether you have an uphill, downhill or sidehill lie. You might not be far from the green but it’s a tricky shot to find the putting surface. Be happy with an opening par on this hole.

Looking back down the 6th hole

At first glance at the scorecard, the 6th hole, a par 5 of 498 yards might seem like an easy birdie chance. However, no matter where your tee shot lands, the second shot is all carry on the direct line to the green, which is hidden. For us, it’s a three-shot hole. The safe line for your second shot is up the right on the line of the marker pole. This will leave you a pitch shot down to the undulating green which sits in a bowl.

Beautiful but Treacherous

The Par 3 7th hole

The 7th hole is a beautiful par 3 of 171 yards from the white tee. From the elevated tee at the top of the dunes, you get a wonderful view of the beach and the sea however don’t get distracted. This is a tough hole. You must hit the green to have the best chance of a par. Miss the green, left, right, short or long and you will struggle to get up and down. This was our favourite hole on the course.

The Back Nine

Again, choosing our favourite holes on the back nine was incredibly difficult. In the end, we chose the 11th, 15th and 16th holes on this wonderful back nine.

The 11th hole

At 445 yards, the 11th is a difficult and strong par 4. Off the tee, aim for the left half of the fairway as this gives you the best angle for your second shot. Take enough club to carry to the green as anything short will kick off to the left leaving you a tricky chip shot. This hole is stroke index 2 for a reason. Make a four here and you will feel delighted.

The Start of the End

If you can finish with four pars at Western Gailes GC, you will certainly feel a sense of accomplishment as the closing stretch will test your game to its limits.

The beautiful 15th hole

The 15th is a cracking par 3 of 194 yards. The green is well protected by bunkers both left and right of the approach. Any breeze off the water and you will struggle to stay on this green. If you can finish on this putting surface you know you have hit an excellent shot. Take a three here and run to the next tee.

The approach to the 16th green

The 16th hole plays 404 yards from the white tees. There is a bunker both left and right in the landing area making the fairway narrow. If you go with a driver then you must avoid the bunkers. If you lay up short of them then you are left with a long iron or hybrid over the burn to the green. This hole will make you think from the tee to the green. A lovely par 4 that will test your mettle.
