If you’re looking for a Scottish golf course that blends championship design with breathtaking scenery, the Mar Hall Golf Course at the JA Mar Hall Hotel & Resort should be high on your list. Set on a 240-acre estate with views of the River Clyde and framed by the Kilpatrick Hills, this parkland course offers a unique mix of challenge, beauty, and five-star luxury. Located just 15 minutes from Glasgow Airport, it’s one of the most accessible and enjoyable golf destinations in Scotland.
Championship Course Design
Designed by Dave Thomas, the Mar Hall Championship Golf Course is a par-70 layout that stretches over 6,500 yards. True to Thomas’s style, the course combines natural beauty with thoughtful strategy. Golfers will find tree-lined fairways, subtle elevation changes, and slick, well-protected greens that reward precision and good course management.
With three tee options, Mar Hall welcomes all golfers — from beginners and high handicappers to low-index players looking for a genuine test. Every round feels different, making this course perfect for repeat play and golf breaks. The yardages range from 5516 yards to 6507 yards from the back (white) tees. As always, choose the tees to suit your game and handicap. We chose to play from the white tees and it was a very good test for us.
The Front Nine
We have chosen to feature the signature hole, the 3rd. The hardest hole, the 4th and the tricky 7th hole on the front nine. Why these three? Well, the first two are obvious but we felt that the 7th deserved to be featured as we think it sums up what playing at Mar Hall is all about.

View from the 3rd tee
The 3rd hole is a dogleg par 4 of 405 yards. The line off the tee is between the tree on the left and the bridge parapet. Too far right and you will not be able to see the green for your second shot. If you can keep it tight to the tree, that will leave you a good look down the hill to the green.

View of the 2nd shot on the 3rd hole
The second shot is downhill with the Erskine Bridge, the Kilpatrick Hills and the River Clyde as a backdrop. Even with a decent tee shot we still had almost 180 yards to the green. Hit this green in two and you should be very happy. The green is wide but not particularly deep. Don’t go long as you may never see your ball again!

The second shot on the 4th hole
At 449 yards, the 4th hole is the longest par 4 on the course. It’s also stroke index 1. We hit our best drive of the day here and still had 200 yards to the pin. The green slopes from front to back. We hit a perfect 5 wood which landed at the flag but we were still almost 20 yards from the pin. The green is slightly elevated so we needed to carry the front to reach. Anything landing short will not reach the putting surface.
Choices

Your tee shot on the 7th hole
Depending on how far you hit the ball, you have the choice of aiming left or right on this hole. If you hit the ball around 275 yards, your line is up the right hand side. If, like us, you don’t hit it that far, your line off the tee is on the left side of the bunker. That’s the line we took and it left us with a clear shot of 165 yards into a green protected by bunkers right and left. If we had gone up the right side, we would have been blocked out by the trees.

The approach to the 7th green if you pick the wrong line
If you do not manage to land on the putting surface then you will face a difficult up and down for par. Go in the greenside bunkers as we did and it will take a world class bunker shot to save your par. Let’s just say that our bunker shot wasn’t world class…
The Back Nine
As always, we have chosen to feature a further three holes on the back nine. We will feature the 10th, 14th and 16th holes, a par 3, then two excellent par 4’s.

The short 10th hole
The 10th hole is a very tricky par 3 of 147 yards. It has a narrow green which slopes downhill left to right. Miss the green left, as we did and there is no chance of making par. Miss the green right and you will be chipping from the rough to a green that sits above you. In other words, don’t miss the green if you want to make par.

The picturesque 14th hole
The 14th hole is one of the prettiest holes on the course. It measures 352 yards and plays as a dogleg from right to left. Off the tee your line is right of the bunker on the corner. This will leave you a short iron or wedge into a green you can’t see. You need to trust your yardage on this hole and don’t let the backdrop put you off. This is an excellent short par 4.
Tough Finish

Your approach on the 16th hole
The closing four hole stretch is hard with pars of 5, 4, 3, 4 and we could have chosen any of these holes to feature. We eventually settled on the 16th hole which is a 401 yard dogleg left. There are bunkers on the left side of the corner which must be avoided if par is your target. The second shot is slightly uphill to a green which you can only see part of. It will take a well struck shot with a mid iron to get onto the putting surface.
The 17th is a difficult par 3 of 201 yards with a large bunker just short of the putting surface. The 18th is a beautiful 413 yard par 4 which flows left to right and the second shot is uphill to a green you can’t see. Make par on all or most of the closing four holes and it will be the perfect end to an enjoyable round on an excellent golf course.
In Our Opinion
The JA Mar Hall is a resort style golf course with hundreds of mature trees on the west coast of Scotland. The new owners, JA Resorts & Hotels are in the middle of a multi million pound refurbishment of the hotel and spa alongside the construction of new lodges and investment on the golf course. It’s exciting times at JA Mar Hall.
On the course, they have recently finished redoing all the bunkers. The course itself was in very good condition for late September and the putting surfaces were excellent. This course is not as well known as it should be. With the new owners, major investment and a big push on the marketing front, it will soon be much better known to the Scottish, UK and International golf trade and travel companies.
Resort Experience for Golfers
Unlike many standalone courses, Mar Hall offers a complete resort golf experience. After a round, players can relax at the five-star hotel, enjoy fine dining, or unwind in the award-winning spa. For golf trips, this makes Mar Hall ideal for couples or groups seeking a mix of great golf and luxury hospitality.
Just a short drive from Glasgow city centre and airport, Mar Hall is perfect for golf days, golf breaks, or Scottish golf holidays. Its location makes it easy for international visitors and local golfers alike, while its facilities ensure every guest enjoys more than just a round of golf.
Why Play the JA Mar Hall Golf Course?

Thank you to Chris McQueen, Head of Golf at JA Mar Hall for arranging our round and to his proshop team for looking after us. Thanks again to Chris for our distinctly Scottish lunch of a square sausage roll and coffee. It was lovely and just what we needed prior to our golf.
