The story of Black Diamond Ranch, home to the Quarry Course, is a testament to vision, perseverance, and innovation. What was once an overlooked and abandoned limestone quarry in Citrus County, Florida, has been transformed into one of the nation’s most prestigious golf communities. This remarkable journey began in the early 1980s with Stan Olsen, a tech entrepreneur turned visionary developer.

In 1984, he acquired a 1,600-acre property near Lecanto, which had originally been settled in the 1930s by Ohio landowner John Newell and later owned by citrus entrepreneur John Taylor Jr. The land was named Black Diamond Ranch, inspired by a high-quality grapefruit variety, but its greatest potential lay hidden in its rugged topography.

A Vision Transformed

When Olsen first toured the property, the real estate salesman did his best to keep him away from the 80-acre scar that was the quarry, as the relator deemed it unusable and feared it might scuttle the entire deal. However, Olsen saw beyond the barren rock and envisioned something extraordinary: a golf course that would integrate the quarry’s dramatic cliffs and elevation changes, creating a layout unlike any other in Florida. To bring this vision to life, he enlisted renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, then the most sought-after architect in the game.

Their first conversation was simple but decisive. Olsen told Fazio, “You build the best golf course in the world, and I’ll figure out where the homes will go.” Inspired by this bold directive, Fazio designed a masterpiece that turned the seemingly inhospitable quarry into one of the most breathtaking courses in the world.

The Quarry Course: A Golfing Masterpiece

The Quarry Course debuted in December 1987, immediately garnering widespread acclaim. Unlike most luxury developments where real estate dictates design, Black Diamond placed golf at the heart of the community. The result was an elegant and spacious residential layout, where homes complemented the course rather than dominating it.

The Quarry Course quickly gained legendary status, particularly for its iconic stretch of holes known as the “Quarry Holes” (13-17). This five-hole sequence, set along and within the quarry’s cliffs, provided some of the most visually stunning and strategically demanding golf holes in the world. Dan Jenkins, one of golf’s most esteemed writers, famously called them “The 5 Best Consecutive Holes of Golf in the World.”

Among these, the 13th hole, a 183-yard par 3, plays from a tee 75 feet above the quarry floor to a green perched on the opposite side. The 15th hole, a 371-yard par 4, demands precision off the tee to avoid water and bunkers while setting up a daring approach to a green nestled along the quarry wall. The closing quarry hole, the 17th, is a daunting 214-yard par 3, with the green boxed in by sheer rock walls on the left.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Quarry Course is a true test of skill, with challenging elevation changes, dramatic carries, and strategic shot-making opportunities that set it apart from other courses in Florida. Even the front nine defies expectations of Florida golf, featuring rolling sandy terrain, dramatic elevation shifts, and fairways framed by majestic live oaks. The sandy soil and natural vegetation create an environment that feels more reminiscent of the Carolinas than the Sunshine State.

A Storied History of Events

Black Diamond Ranch has played host to numerous high-profile events over the years, including U.S. Open qualifiers, state championships, and elite amateur tournaments. The challenge of the Quarry Course has tested some of the best golfers in the world, reinforcing its reputation as a premier competitive venue. The U.S. Open sectional qualifier in 2012, for instance, saw only two players break 70 in two rounds, highlighting the demanding nature of the course.

Expanding the Vision: The Ranch and Highlands Courses

Following the success of the Quarry Course, Olsen and Fazio collaborated again to develop additional courses that would complement the community’s golfing experience. The Ranch Course opened in 1997, offering a contrasting style with fairways framed by oak hammocks and a more traditional parkland feel reminiscent of North Carolina’s sandhills. Spanning 7,004 yards, the Ranch Course provides a more relaxed but equally rewarding test of golf. Tom Fazio himself has described the final three holes of the Ranch Course as “the best finishing holes I’ve ever designed.”

In 1999, the nine-hole Highlands Course was introduced, further expanding Black Diamond’s golf offerings. While shorter in length, the Highlands Course maintains the same design integrity and natural beauty found throughout the community, providing members with an excellent alternative for a quick round.

Changing Hands and Modern Enhancements

In 2011, Black Diamond Ranch was sold to Escalante Golf, a boutique owner and operator of premier golf properties. Under their stewardship, the community has continued to thrive, with substantial investments made to maintain and enhance its facilities. In 2023, architect Tripp Davis was brought in to renovate the bunkers on the Ranch Course, with plans to update the greens and tee boxes further.

“We will operate Black Diamond Ranch with a deep understanding of its history and principles to ensure that current and future members enjoy elite service, pristine course conditions, and a strong esprit de corps,” said David McDonald, President of Escalante Golf.

Today, Black Diamond Ranch spans 1,320 acres and remains one of Florida’s most sought-after private golf communities. With only 795 residential properties planned—fewer than 200 remain available—the community continues attracting discerning golf enthusiasts from across the country.

Housing options range from Village Homes designed for turnkey living to expansive Estate Homes on lots up to one-and-a-half acres. Prices for homesites vary from $90,000 to $300,000 in the Village areas and $140,000 to $250,000 for Estate Homes, ensuring diverse living options.

Beyond its golf courses, Black Diamond Ranch offers an array of amenities, including a clubhouse with a wraparound porch overlooking the course, tennis courts, a junior Olympic-sized pool, and a 24-hour fitness center. The clubhouse serves as a hub for social activity, hosting weekly classes, member-organized clubs, and regular social events.

Since its inception, Black Diamond Ranch has stood among the nation’s premier residential golf communities. The Quarry Course, a Tom Fazio masterpiece, has consistently ranked in the Top 100 by Golf Digest and Golfweek. Named Golf Digest’s “Best New Private Course in America” in 1993, it remains one of the finest, offering year-round playability and exceptional value. With Escalante’s commitment and investment, it’s poised to climb even higher—I’ve played over half of the Top 100, and few surpass it.
