The Short Game Scoring Zone – How to Dominate from 30 Yards and In

There’s a reason the best players in the world spend hours inside 30 yards—this is the scoring zone. It’s where rounds are saved, birdies are made, and confidence is built.

“The closer you get to the hole, the more important precision becomes,” says elite golf coach Mark Wood. “Inside 30 yards, every shot is a chance to get up and down.”

If you want to lower your scores fast, this is where your focus needs to be.

What Makes This Zone So Tricky?

Shots from 10–30 yards aren’t full swings, but they’re not putts either. Many amateurs fall into a grey area here—unsure of technique, club selection, or even strategy.

“They try to ‘feel it’ or decelerate into the shot,” Wood explains. “That leads to chunks, skulls, or leaving it way short.”

Let’s take the guesswork out of it.

Step 1: Understand Your Shot Options

From inside 30 yards, you usually have three viable shots:

  1. Bump-and-run – Low trajectory, lots of rollout.

  2. Standard pitch – Mid trajectory, controlled spin and rollout.

  3. High soft shot – High trajectory, minimal rollout (flop-style).

“You don’t need to master every shot,” Wood says. “You just need to know when to use each one—and have one go-to you can trust under pressure.”

Step 2: Match the Shot to the Lie and Green

Use this simple decision tree:

  • Flat green, lots of green to work with? Bump-and-run.

  • Tight pin, some green to work with? Standard pitch.

  • Short-sided or over trouble? High soft shot.

Choose the easiest shot that gets the job done.

“You don’t get bonus points for difficulty,” says Wood. “Play the smartest shot, not the fanciest one.”

Step 3: Set Up for Control, Not Power

For all shots inside 30 yards, your focus should be on control and contact—not power.

Here’s a reliable setup:

  • Narrow stance

  • Weight slightly forward (60%)

  • Ball centered (adjust forward or back depending on trajectory)

  • Hands neutral or slightly forward

  • Clubface square or slightly open (depending on loft need)

“The biggest key? Stay committed to the motion. No decel,” Wood emphasizes. “Even short shots need speed through the ball.”

Drill: The 30-Yard Ladder

This is one of my go-to drills for dialing in touch and trajectory.

How to Do It:

  1. Set targets at 10, 20, and 30 yards.

  2. Use the same club (e.g., 56° wedge) and adjust swing length only.

  3. Try to land 3 shots at each distance with a consistent trajectory and rollout.

Track how many land within a 5-foot circle. It’s tougher than it sounds.

“This drill builds feel and distance control without overcomplicating your technique,” says Wood. “You learn what swing lengths produce what results.”

Bonus Technique: The Triangle Pitch

If you struggle with consistency from 20–30 yards, try this simple technique:

  • Keep your arms and shoulders moving together like a triangle.

  • Minimal wrist action.

  • Smooth acceleration through the ball.

“This keeps the motion connected and consistent,” Wood explains. “You’ll hit cleaner shots with better trajectory and spin.”

Make It Real: Practice With Pressure

Now that you’ve built your technique, simulate real-course situations.

Try the “5 Up-and-Downs” Game:

  • Drop five balls from random lies inside 30 yards.

  • Chip or pitch and putt each one out.

  • Your goal: get up and down at least 3 out of 5.

Add scoring, vary clubs, and repeat weekly.

“If you can go 4-for-5 from 30 yards and in, you’re playing at a very high level,” Wood says. “It’s not about perfection—it’s about consistency.”

Final Thoughts

The short game scoring zone is where good players become great. It’s not flashy, but it’s the most powerful scoring weapon you have.

“Master this zone and you’ll start seeing birdie looks instead of scrambling for bogeys,” says Wood. “Confidence grows here—and that confidence spreads to every part of your game.”

Focus your practice where it matters most. Dominate from 30 yards and in—and watch your scores drop like never before.
