Masters Sunday at Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas

It’s Masters Sunday and in honor of Texan Ben Crenshaw’s 1984 win, we take on Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas with forged blades and persimmon woods like he used 34 years ago. These beautiful Wilson Haig Ultra Power irons are 2-iron thru wedge — such a joy. A thinned 2-iron at 40-degrees can be fatal, but we gladly take a break from titanium, Jailbreak and Twist Face.

Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, TexasThere are two seasons in Texas: summer and schizophrenic. The weather is prime in the days leading up to our 8:30 a.m. tee time. However, Texas, being Texas decides 40 Fahrenheit/4 Celsius is a good idea. We layer up and double glove – no problem. From the first tee to the eighteenth green, the temperature increases 15-degrees.

The star in the middle of the fourth fairway

Star maintenance on the fourth fairway

Cowboys Golf Club is the only NFL-themed golf course in the world. There are stars on the front door, in the restaurant-bar, pro shop too, on the range and on all 18 holes from tee to green. Redskins fans will cringe – Cowboys fans rejoice. Just like on the 50-yard line at AT&T Stadium (Cowboys Stadium), a similar star is painted in the middle of the fourth fairway, its signature hole. There are Dallas Cowboys historical markers at each tee box and the Ring of Honor Kitchen & Bar is a tribute to its legends. Several photos of Roger Staubach, Tom Landry, Troy, Emmitt, and Michael cover the walls.

Cowboys Golf Club is a quality golf course and a lot of fun to play. The par five first, short par four second and par three third is an enjoyable start. The tee box on No. 4 sits on a high perch and everyone loves to hit driver from elevation. No. 5 is only par four that plays over 450 yards – it’s not a long golf course. The greens are well maintained and roll well. Overall, course conditioning is class.

A quality golf course is typically enough to appease any golfer, but this experience is unique. Aside from the Dallas Cowboys theme, this golf course is all-inclusive. Rack rate with tax is around $200, which includes a round of golf, cart, range balls, food and non-alcoholic beverages. The key here is cuisine, which is fantastic. The proper way to enjoy Cowboys Golf Club is for the entire day. Arrive early and have breakfast, Chef Kevin Grafton does a fantastic job. Schedule the first tee time for around 9 a.m. and grab a jalapeno foot long dog at the turn, it’s a must. In fact, it’s a state law in Texas — you have to get a jalapeno dog. Sit down for lunch after the first round. Replay rounds are $45 per player and based on availability. Have some fun, get loose and play 36 — eat, drink and make birdies.

On Tuesday, May 8 the club will host the 8th Annual John Daly Texas Shootout. The 1:15 p.m. shotgun start is $1,400 plus tax per four-person team. Worth every damn penny. The Dallas Cowboys… John Daly… it’s a perfect storm. Entry includes: lunch, dinner, all food, snacks and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages, drink tickets, a team photo with John Daly, tee gift including merchandise bucks for mobile pro shop, special contest holes and a prize will go to the first-place team.

A lot of golf courses talk about being unique – Cowboys Golf Club is actually making it happen.
