Wonderful Wallasey.
The last stop on my whirlwind tour of England’s Golf Coast was a visit to Wallasey Golf Club. I knew of Wallasey by reputation but this was to be my first visit to the Home of Stableford.
Looking over the course from the elevated first tee, my excitement levels rose as I spotted tight fairways meandering amongst great sand dunes and I knew that I needed my “A” game to tackle this links.
After a gentle introduction on the first 2 holes, the elevation started to change on the 3rd hole as the fairway gently tilted uphill with the green just below the horizon. What awaited us at the top of the hill?
The 4th hole is just spectacular, a par 5 measuring just over 530 yards with the medal tee situated about 100 feet about the fairways. The photo above just doesn’t do it justice. This video of my tee shot might give you a better idea and yes, I did hit it on the fairway!!
In my opinion, the really impressive thing about Wallasey is the run of holes from 8 through to 18. I found each of these holes to present a different challenge. Holes going in various directions, elevated and sloping greens, short holes and long holes, each hole was a delight, both to play and visually.
The 11th hole is a shortish par 4 with the 2nd shot to an elevated green that runs back left to front right. The 12th hole is a lovely par 3 from an elevated tee to a narrow green surrounded by 5 bunkers.
Holes 13 and 14 are back to back par 5’s which are both reachable in 2 depending on the wind direction.
The 15th is also a shortish par 4 but with 3 fairway bunkers on the left side of the fairway and the 2nd shot to an elevated green, its not an easy hole. The 16th is a long par 3 and the 17th is a dogleg par 4 where a long drive is required so that you can get a look at the green.
The 18th is another shortish par 4 where finding the narrow fairway is a must. It also has an undulating fairway so even getting your tee shot on it, it doesn’t guarantee an easy approach shot. If you don’t hit your tee shot far enough, the 2nd shot will be blind although you can get a line from the clubhouse in the background.
You can probably tell but I absolutely loved Wallasey. It is a challenge but its a fair one. I love that its on a piece of ground that has many elevation changes and that depending on the wind direction, will play differently each time you tee it up.
The course was presented in magnificent condition and the recent work done by John McLoughlin and his team around the bunkers is exceptional.
Wallasey is a class act and I recommend it highly. England’s Golf Coast is a special place with an abundance of excellent golf courses to choose from. I hope you have enjoyed the reviews of courses which you may not have been familiar with before. Until next time….
