Little rolling creeks, quaint bridges and waterfall features mark almost every hole on Turnberry Isle Resort and Club’s Soffer Course. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., both of the resort’s golf courses were re-crafted by four-time major champion, Raymond Floyd. Accents stretch from tee to green with flowers, undulation, fountains and beautifully cut bunkers. The waterfalls are Disney-esque and create a more enjoyable experience for the player, they’re fun. The golf course is in immaculate condition and delivers on all expectations one might have for a high-end golf resort or nice private club.
Few, if any areas in South Florida have as many condominiums as Aventura, Florida where Turnberry Isle is situated. However, the wall of condos wrapping the golf course make for a nice backdrop – it feels more cozy than overdeveloped. The Atlantic Ocean isn’t in play, but there is water on 14 of the 18 Soffer Course holes. It’s not a long golf course and it releases well. A tall order for a vacationing golfer, but consider hitting a three wood or even long iron off the tee. There is a hole-by-hole flyover feature available on their website, which might help first-time players shave a few shots.
The Mediterranean-style resort offers a full pro shop to stock up on gear; a driving range, chipping and putting greens; electric carts with GPS and they have Callaway rental clubs. There is also a three-level spa with 27 private treatment rooms and a 3,650 square-foot fitness center with aerobics and indoor cycling studios, weight and cardio rooms. The Spa Café serves healthy light fare and refreshments. And yes there is plenty of meeting space for those that must mix business with golf.
