These are two quality memberships in Tucson, Arizona just two miles apart — The Gallery Golf Club has 36 holes of golf and The Golf Club at Dove Mountain offers 27. Both weave through the Tortolita Mountains and work nicely with the Sonoran Desert.
1. One thing we’ll remember about these golf courses in five years?
Both golf courses were quality desert tracks, but it’s details that stick with golfers for years after. The Gallery’s range is one of the best in America. They ProV range balls, 10 out of 10 quality turf, lots of targets and a double range to adjust for the blazing Arizona sun.
Dove Mountain’s 27 holes were designed by Jack Nicklaus — typical Golden Bear he gives players room off the tee and demands accuracy on the approach. One thing that stands out is the elevation change — it’s quite dramatic.
4. Favorite holes?
The Gallery Golf Club: The North Course was designed by John Fought and Tom Lehman, its South Course is a John Fought design. Both courses are very good, but perhaps the North gets more buzz. The 18th on the South is a good hole, but I’m a sucker for a setup that favors a draw off the tee.
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain: Jack never disappoints — of the three nines — The Wild Burro is the clear winner on name alone. Its 5th hole plays uphill through tree-like saguaro cacti.
3. Price?
The gallery is a private golf club.
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain: semi-private
4. Potpourri?
There’s a Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain and guests and play the golf course so it’s a semi-private facility.
