The Greenbrier: Here is What Phil Mickelson Think About it

The Greenbrier hosted many PGA tours and people who watched the PGA tour saw Phil Mickelson greenbrier ads.

Four public golf courses and one private are there — a sixth is on the way. The PGA Tour visits The Greenbrier each year and the West Virginia resort hosted the Ryder Cup in 1979. Beyond star ratings, perhaps a true measure is the number of U.S. Presidents that have visited — The Greenbrier has hosted 27 of 45 Presidents.

America’s only private casino is there. There are 320 one-armed bandits and 35 table games, including blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and Texas Hold ’em. And of course, there is tennis, a spa, 35 retail shops and 20 lounges and restaurants. The Greenbrier is an absolutely massive luxury resort and also a National Historic Landmark.

A few unique activities are offered.  In fact, they have one of the most unordinary resort activities in the world — a declassified bunker. Carved deep into the mountainside beneath the West Virginia Wing is an emergency Cold War fallout shelter. It was once a top secret U.S. government relocation facility for Congress, The Bunker is now open to anyone interested in reliving a legendary piece of The Greenbrier history.

And for those that watch the PGA Tour — we’ve all seen the commercials with Phil Mickelson and falconry. We spoke with Cam Huffman, PR director about falconry — here’s the scoop.

WBGD: Among the most popular activities at Greenbrier, where does falconry rank?
CH: Because it is so unique and not many understand it, falconry is not quite as popular, in terms of numbers of people who participate, as some of the other activities at The Greenbrier. However, it is one of the most popular when it comes to positive feedback from the guests who participate. Nearly every guest who tries it comes back with stories about how much they enjoyed the experience.

WBGD: What percentage of guests enjoy the falconry experience?
CH: This is not a number that we track, but I would guess it is around 10 percent or fewer.

WBGD: How often is falconry available?
CH: This time of year there is one session Monday – Friday and two sessions on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. As reservations and requests pick up, more sessions are added when needed.

WBGD: How much does it cost?
CH: Lessons are $129 per person for 90 minutes.

WBGD: Any special stories or anything interesting you would like to share in regard to falconry?
CH: The experience is an extremely interesting one. It includes not just a demonstration but plenty of history about the sport and an explanation into how the birds are trained and why they do what they do. The sport is more than 4,000 years old, and our instructors are incredibly talented and knowledgeable. Guests have an opportunity for some hands-on experiences with the birds that they won’t forget.
