El Niño” AKA Sergio Garcia: he is The Most Polarizing Golfers?

Sergio Garcia is the world’s most polarizing golfers

“El Niño,” Sergio Garcia is one of the most polarizing golfers the world has ever seen. Like Texas weather, his next move is an absolute mystery.

We love him for his gritty effort as a teenager battling Tiger at the 1999 PGA Championship. He then takes criticism for spitting in the cup at Doral in 2007. We admire him for an inspiring playoff win over Paul Goydos at the 2008 Players Championship. We scratch our heads at his fried chicken comments about Tiger Woods at the 2013 European Tour awards dinner in London. We love him again for his relentless fight in the Ryder Cup, he’s won 22.5 points in eight appearances. Then we’re annoyed at his Tiger bickering. In 2013, at Sawgrass he accused Tiger of spurring cheers during his backswing.

The longtime, “best in the game without a major,” the world of golf loved his 2017 Masters win. It was one of the great ball striking performances of all-time. His father is the only swing coach he’s ever had. Despite years of criticism — he’s stayed loyal to dad, which is admirable and we love him for it.

Sergio defended his green jacket in a fashion that only El Niño could. His Champions Dinner on Tuesday night had quality Spanish wine and a lobster rice dish as the main course. Then he teed it up on Thursday. He arrived at the fifteenth two over par and still in the tournament. He went to the sixteenth tee 10 over par with no chance of defending. He tied the Masters record for the highest score ever recorded on a hole, a 13. He put five balls in the water. Five!

His polarizing nature has become his charming trademark and it seems the world has come around to it.

No one knows what he’s gonna do next. And for that — we’re fans.
