Hit Your Longest Ever Drives

How You Can Hit Your Longest Drives

Maximize your driving distance with these simple keys tips from PGA Golf Coach Mark Wood

One thing I have noticed from studying all the long-ball hitters like Haydn Porteous,  Oliver Bekkerm, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson is they catch the ball on the upswing. Hitting the ball on the up from off the tee increases the distance as the correct launch and spin conditions are achieved. High launch and low spin with the driver will encourage the ball to roll out when it lands and hits the fairway.

A couple of simple adjustments to make to hit longer drives are as follows.

Hit Longer Drives

When addressing the ball ensure that you line it up with your left heel and have a slightly wider stance than you normally would do for an iron. Tilt your spine away from the target; this is going to set your head and sternum nicely behind the ball. Your shoulders will have a bit more tilt than normal.

Increase Drive Distance

As you make your backswing fully turn your shoulders so that the left shoulder turns far enough behind the ball as you complete your backswing.

Golf Swing Tips

A key thought to have as you swing down into impact is to feel that you keep your head and sternum back behind the ball to encourage the “hitting up on the ball” through impact. It might feel that you leave a little bit more weight on the back foot to encourage this tilt.

These small tweaks will create the correct angle of attack so you can enjoy the extra power and added yardage.
