Keep Disrespecting Patrick Reed, He Loves It

The ongoing narrative about Reed is that he’s “unpleasant.” Reed said he was motivated when Rory McIlroy got a louder applause on the first tee. Either there were a lot of Europeans in the gallery or something’s wrong here. Why the hell is Reed not getting support in his own country?

  • Because he’s brash? (So is Tiger)
  • His cursing? (Tiger again)
  • His problems with his parents? (There are two sides to every story)
  • Or is it that he was kicked out of the University of Georgia for alcohol-related offenses? (Haven’t we all?)

When did golf fans become so saintly? Aren’t these the traits we look for in heroes? Winning cures all and perhaps support for Reed will grow with each win. Be assured – Europeans won’t offer Reed any support in France in September at the Ryder Cup. Largely in part because they don’t like how he owns Rory McIlroy. Reed has a grip on this match going back to the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine – Reed won by a point. And then, of course, yesterday, McIlroy started the day with a shank and shot 74. Reed carded a one under 71 and left town in a green jacket.

We should embrace Reed’s fiery attitude. He’s not out there to make friends – he tees it up to kick ass and win trophies. Two things he’s done a lot of since turning pro in 2011.

His success shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone – here’s his abridged resume:

  • Led University High to state championships in 2006 and 2007
  • High school state champion in 2007
  • Led Augusta State to NCAA Division I title in 2010 and 2011
  • 2008 U.S. Amateur semifinalist, where he lost 3 and 2 to eventual U.S. Amateur champion Danny Lee
  • Seven Ryder Cup points in two appearances
  • Six PGA Tour wins including The Masters

The lack support for Reed at Augusta is a joke, but Reed doesn’t appear to care – in fact, he seems to like it.
