All Eyes on the Home of Golf

Fresh off a win at Wimbledon, this week Scotland hosts The Open Championship… it’s a great time to be Scottish. Around 170,000 golf fans are set to visit to South Ayrshire for The Open, almost two-thirds come from outside of Scotland and 28-percent of those from overseas. Last year’s Open Championship, held in St. Andrews delivered an economic impact of £140 million pounds/$184 million dollars to Scotland, making it the biggest golf event ever held in the UK & Ireland.

The Open is one of nine men’s and women’s professional golf events hosted in Scotland this year. The 145th Open Championship starts at Royal Troon tomorrow for the ninth time. Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and the rest of the game’s best will compete for the title of Champion Golfer of the Year and the iconic Claret Jug.

Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland said, “Golf is a vital part of the visitor economy with the ripple effect felt in shops, hotels, restaurants and a wide variety of other businesses across Scotland. These high profile events don’t just provide entertainment – they represent a multi-million financial benefit to Scotland – both urban and rural. The Open at Royal Troon and the eight other golf events in Scotland this year only enhance further our country’s reputation as the Home of Golf with many more lined up for future years such as the Solheim Cup in 2019.”
